Welcome Home, LaGrange Panthers!

Lance Shealy

October 14th will officially kick off this year’s most anticipated event, the 2019 Homecoming week. While Homecoming Day, which includes tailgating and alumni reminiscing on their own college experience, is not until Saturday, the Student Government Association and Panther Activities Committee will have a jam packed week full of excitement and competition.

Homecoming week will be kicked off with the classic Midnight Madness, which includes the basketball teams’ first practice of the year. The band will be playing pep songs throughout the event, making sure that everyone is wide awake and energized to support our players.

The school-wide Panther Pride will continue to carry throughout the week with themed dress up days. These are always a campus favorite, and our Homecoming Committee makes sure that everyone is able to participate in these days with easy ideas! The official dress up schedule as follows:

Pajama Monday (Wear your most comfortable PJ’s to class)

Tuesday Decade Day (Dress from your favorite decade, and see what your parents kept from the 80’s)

On Wednesday, We Wear Pink

Tacky Thursday (the tackier the outfit, the better)

Red and Black Panther Pride Friday (go all out to show off your school spirit)

We have some other week long events happening as well. Every student’s favorite activity to either participate in or just watch, Gotcha!, is returning. The Medallion Hunt will also be taking place, so get ready to search the campus in order to get the prize. The committee is making sure that the search is a little more difficult than it was last year.

The clubs and organizations around campus will compete all week with competitions such as “Can”-struction and Lip Sync Battles in the hopes of earning points for their organizations and groups. The club with the most points at the end of the week will win a monetary prize, which will go directly to their club or organization. The winner will be announced at the football game on Saturday.

Also announced on Saturday will be this year’s King and Queen. This year, we are adding a new addition to Homecoming Royalty, Princess and Prince. Each organization in the events will be able to select one senior representative to serve as their King or Queen and one underclassmen to serve as their Prince and Princess. Royalty nominees will be announced Thursday at the Wild Leap Brewery complex with voting following the next day.

Ryan Cook, our Associate Dean of Campus Life, is hoping that this year’s homecoming will be more fun and exciting than in previous years. He commented, “The hope for homecoming is always to bring people together and celebrate the experiences that are shared on this campus.”

Cook is also excited about the new games and opportunities for organizations. “We’ve created games for everyone to participate in no matter what organizations you’re involved with,” he said, “while also making sure that groups are able to get a benefit from participating in all of the events that we offer.”

Our Homecoming committee has been meeting since early September to make sure the celebration lives up to its highly anticipated promises. We have drawn from a wide range of organizations on campus to ensure that students are well-represented in what they might like to see this year. They met weekly to brainstorm new ideas and decide which traditions were to be kept.

With the help of Ryan Cook and Kayla Watson, the Homecoming Committee brainstormed to modify last year’s schedule. They added improvements and new ideas. The schedule is listed below.
