The International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Cup has started in Sochi, Russia.
Shahriyar Mammadyarov is among the 10 strongest chess players of the tournament with 2782 points. In addition, the top ten includes current world champion Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Alexander Grishyuk and others.
This year’s World Cup is the first major chess tournament since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. 206 chess players are taking part in the men’s tournament. The two winners of the tournament will compete for the title of world champion in 2022. The total prize fund of the tournament is $ 892,500. The winner will receive $ 110,000, the finalist $ 80,000, and the third and fourth place winners will receive $ 60,000 and $ 50,000, respectively.

At the same time, the Women’s World Cup is being held in Sochi. 103 female chess players are taking part in this tournament.
