After falling victim to a ransomware attack that lasted several days last week, the Colonial Pipeline confirmed to the media on Tuesday that its shipping communications system was down.
The company that runs the pipeline said there was no problem with the ransomware attack.
“Our internal server running our upgrade system experienced intermittent crashes this morning, some confirmation efforts are underway and are part of our restoration process. These issues are not related to ransomware or any kind of restoration,” the company said in a statement.
The company said it was “working diligently to get our designation back online and keep our shipping exporters up to date” and the 5,500-mile-long pipeline system continues to be “delivered by refined products to our shipping exporters.”
The ransomware attackers - who were later identified by the FBI and White House officials - are said to have demanded $ 5 million from the pipeline operator to recover the service from a cyber criminal group called DarkSite, which is said to be operating in Russia, but that has not been confirmed. Not by colonialism or not by Tarkside. Colonial said in an update last week that its pipeline infrastructure systems had not been compromised in the hack and that it had shut down the system as a precautionary measure.
Colonialism announced last week that it had resumed gas pipeline service. The crash caused petrol and fuel shortages in Washington, Maryland, North Carolina, Georgia and other states, with President Joe Biden urging Americans not to stockpile gasoline or buy fuel out of panic.
DarkSite at the same time said it was suspending its operations and had lost access to a portion of its infrastructure and financial assets in a statement in Russian.
“In view of the above and the pressure of the United States, the connection program has been shut down. Be safe and good luck. According to the translation by Intel 471, a group of intelligence operators, the home page, servers and other resources will be removed within 48 hours,” the statement read.
Earlier, the Dark Side media quoted him as saying that he was “unpolitical” and that he “wanted to make money”.
But some security researchers were skeptical of DarkSite’s announcement, noting that the law could be repealed for a while to avoid reviewing the law.
Biden, separately, told reporters last week that he would talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the hack, but suggested that “there is no evidence” that the Kremlin had anything to do with the ransomware attack. However, he suggested that the Russian government accept some responsibility.
“So far no one was able to send in the perfect solution, which is not strange,” he said, citing a statement from the FBI.
