Frenchman Esteban O’Connor won the tumultuous Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, while Lewis Hamilton finished third and advanced to mid-season with six points from Max Verstappen in the Formula One Championship.
Verstappen finished 10th after Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Walter Bottas was knocked out early in the first lap crash.
It was only the second podium for the 24-year-old Ocon after he finished second in Sakhir GP in Bahrain late last year.
Ocon finished ahead of Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel, finishing fourth behind Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. Ocon’s teammate Fernando Alonso.
“What a moment, it feels so good,” Ocon said, his heart pounding. “Many thanks to the team for the trust they have placed in me.”
He collapsed in the rain due to botas and retired as a result. The race resumed irrelevantly with only Hamilton on the grid while others were changing tires as the track dried up. Hamilton then had to make a lap, coming out in last place, a few places behind Verstappen.
Mercedes second intelligent tire change for hard tires on the Lap20 overtook the Red Bull, surpassing the Hamilton Verstappen when it came to new tires.
Verstappen was disappointed to be stuck in 11th place now, while Hamilton finished fifth out of 35 out of 70.
