The Unicode Consortium, a not-for-profit organization that sponsors the development and maintenance of international Bidirectional Algorithm for Language (BEL) coding systems, has released data about 2021’s most popular emojis. “Face with tears of joy” takes first place while hearts come in second during their ranking from one to ten respectively followed by rolling on the floor laughing at third place, thumb ups 4th & loud crying face 5th.
In a post that details the most used emojis this year, ‘folded hands’ sit on place six similar to 2019. The ‘face blowing kiss’ leaps from ninth in popularity two years ago and climbs up into the seventh position now! There’s also some movement with regards to which emoji hasn’t made it into the top ten: out goes “two hearts” as we’ve seen replaced by a new addition -smiling face w/ heart eyes emoji- at tenth rank while smiley itself moves down one rank too 16th spot being held since 2021!
The ‘rocket ship’ emoji is the most used in transport and body part categories, while ‘flexed bicep’ comes out on top for one of two different types. The bouquet plant flower has by far been used more than any other category with butterflies coming second place at just under 50%. In addition to being popular across species too-including humans who use it 44% percent as much-the cartwheel may not be a traditional sport but its association suggests happiness rather than violence or competition anyways!
