NDMA advises PDMA Sindh to evacuate vulnerable

The National Disaster Management Authority has advised the PDMA Sindh to initiate evacuation of vulnerable populations living in the floodplains and low-lying areas of the Indus River and its tributaries.

The NDMA has issued this advisory in view of the record high and very high flood levels in the upper reaches of the Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej rivers. It is expected that these flood waters will eventually contribute to the rising flow in the Indus River.

The NDMA stressed on identifying and preparing safe evacuation routes and designated temporary shelters along with provision of essential services. It urged the provincial authorities to ensure the placement of heavy machinery and equipment such as dewatering pumps, excavators and transport vehicles at strategic locations for timely response.

The NDMA advised to stockpile essential relief stocks including food, clean drinking water, tents, medicines and non-food items at the district and tehsil levels and ensure adequate availability of fuel and transport for immediate mobilization in emergencies.

On strengthening critical infrastructure, it called for monitoring embankments, dams and canals for any breaches, seepages, or weak points. Arrangements for reinforcement and plugging should be made immediately. It further stressed the need to ensure power backup and flood protection measures for critical health facilities and water supply schemes.

On community awareness and early warning, the National Disaster Management Authority stressed the need to disseminate timely early warning messages to vulnerable populations through local administrations, mosques, media and community networks. It said that mobilization of local volunteers and community-based organizations is crucial to assist in evacuation and relief activities.
